A Rare Virus from Mosquitoes Kills One in the U.S.
What is Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)?
EEE is a rare but deadly virus that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
The virus is found in birds, and mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.
EEE can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), which can lead to death.
Symptoms of EEE
The symptoms of EEE can vary, but they often include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Chills
More severe symptoms can include:
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Coma
Treatment for EEE
There is no specific treatment for EEE, but supportive care can help to improve the chances of survival.
Treatment may include:
- Intravenous fluids
- Antiviral medications
- Respiratory support
How to Prevent EEE
There is no vaccine available to prevent EEE, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection:
- Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn)
- Wear long sleeves and pants when you are outdoors
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535
- Remove standing water around your home, where mosquitoes can breed
Outlook for EEE
The outlook for EEE depends on the severity of the infection.
About one-third of people who are infected with EEE will die.
Those who survive may have permanent neurological damage.
