NWS Issues Red Flag Warning Through Saturday

Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions Expected

Strong Winds, Low Humidity, and Dry Vegetation Combine to Create High Fire Risk

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning for the San Joaquin Valley and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, effective through Saturday evening. The warning indicates that dangerous fire weather conditions are expected due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation.

The warning area includes the cities of Fresno, Visalia, Hanford, and Clovis, as well as the surrounding unincorporated areas. Winds are expected to gust up to 50 mph, with relative humidity dropping to 10% or less. These conditions can create explosive fire behavior, making it difficult for firefighters to control any blazes that may start.

The NWS urges residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their property from wildfires. These precautions include:

  • Creating and maintaining defensible space around your home.
  • Having a plan in place to evacuate if necessary.
  • Being aware of the latest fire danger conditions.

Residents can stay informed about the latest fire danger conditions by visiting the NWS website or by following the NWS on social media.

The NWS also reminds residents that fireworks are illegal in many areas of California, and that using fireworks during a Red Flag Warning is extremely dangerous. Anyone who violates the fireworks ban could face fines or imprisonment.
